So, you’re ready to buy a harness but not sure what size to order? You’re in the right place! Follow these steps to ensure you purchase the right size for your furry friend as a properly fitting harness is essential for your dog's comfort and safety.

How to measure a dog for a harness.

1. Firstly, using a soft tape measure, measure around your dog's chest just behind the front legs, where it is its widest (1).

2. Next, measure from the tip of their shoulders to where their neck meets their chest (2).

3. And lastly, check our sizing chart and find the size that matches your dog's measurements.

If you’re unsure of which size to order, please email our friendly team who can help you choose the right size for your dog.

Should I measure my dog for a harness when they are sitting or standing?

You should measure your dog when they are standing up. This will give you the most accurate measurement.

How to know if a harness fits your dog.

So, your order’s arrived, and you can’t wait to try it out on your furry friend, but how do you know if it fits correctly?

First, pop the harness onto your dog and adjust the buckles accordingly. There are four in total; two at the front and two at the back, meaning there’s room for growth (don’t worry, we know how it is when the treats come out!). The D ring should be at the front (see Frank below modelling the harness beautifully).

How tight should a harness fit?

Once in position, the harness should feel snug and comfortable but not tight on your dog. You should be able to fit two fingers between the harness and your dog's body.

Try walking your dog at home before you head out to make sure the fit is right.

How do I know if the harness is too small?

If the harness is too small, your dog may struggle to breathe and move comfortably. The harness may also rub against your dog's skin, causing irritation and discomfort.

How do I know if the harness is too big?

If the harness is too big, your dog may be able to wiggle out of it. The harness may also shift around on your dog's body, causing discomfort and irritation.

The harness doesn’t fit my dog, what should I do next?

If you have tried the buckles on all of the various settings and you’re having trouble getting the harness to fit suitably, please get in touch for help and advice. We offer a 30-day returns policy.

Can a dog slip out of a harness?

It is possible for a dog to slip out of a harness if it is not fitted correctly or if the harness is not the appropriate size for the dog. Make sure to measure your dog carefully and adjust the harness accordingly.

Should I leave the harness on my dog all the time?

No, you should not leave the harness on your dog all the time. A harness is meant for walks and other outdoor activities. Leaving it on for extended periods of time can cause discomfort and irritation for your dog.

How often should I replace my dog's harness?

You should replace your dog's harness if it becomes damaged or worn out. Additionally, if your dog has outgrown their current harness, it's time for a replacement.

At Albert & Arthur, our harnesses are made to last a lifetime so, if you have any problems with one of our products, please get in touch.
